Devils Rally Comes Up Just Short Against Unbeaten Hornets

CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson women's lacrosse team got five combined goals from the duo of Eva Gardner and Bella Guckes to help erase a four-goal deficit to the visiting Shenandoah University on Wednesday night at Biddle Field. Unfortunately, for the Red and White a goal from Alex Ripkin with 13 seconds left was enough to propel the Hornets to an 11-10 non-conference win.

First Quarter
  • Two minutes into the game each side found the back of the net with Ayla Jantz and Abby Geary tallying for their respective sides.
  • Dickinson posted the next two shots through Carson Cerow and Gardner, but Maddie Gaboury was up to the task.
  • Then, following a green card issued to Guckes, Addison Harmel solved Peyton VanDorpe for the 2-1 edge. However, Schuyler Cerow claimed the ensuing draw and got it up to Crawford Fisher who setup Jillian McNulty to tie the score 2-2 with 7:05 gone.
  • The Hornets responded with a three-goal run to close the frame making it 5-2 as the game entered the second.
Second Quarter
  • Brynna O'Brien took over between the pipes to start the period and she was immediately tested as an early card set the stage for Harmel to notch her second of the day just under two minutes in.
  • A few minutes later Mia Snellenburg poked the rock free from Natalie Opatovsky resulting in her finding Fisher who played provider once again linking up with Gardner to cut it down to 6-3.
  • Guckes then found her scoring touch twice in a three minute span scoring once directly off a draw win from Carson Cerow, before striking after McKenna Keefer knocked the ball away from Cameryn Bowker to pull within 6-5.
  • However, Talia Maria claimed the ensuing draw leading to Emily Ransom solving O'Brien to push the gap back to two (7-5) going to the break.
Third Quarter
  • After handing out multiple assists earlier in the game, Fisher got on the board herself picking up a marker just 49 seconds off the clock (7-6).
  • Shots from Gardner and McNulty would sail over the cage preventing the Devils from drawing even, which allowed Kaitlin Clements to bury the rock pushing the lead to 8-6.
  • The Red and White continued to put up a valiant effort despite the deficit and using the momentum from a pair of O'Brien stops both Abby Geary and Guckes tallied to finally pull level 8-8 with 5:28 to go.
  • Both sides recorded two shots over the rest of the frame, but it would be the Hornets that scored thanks to Keira Choi giving them a 9-8 edge.
Fourth Quarter
  • Dickinson took just under two minutes to once again find an equalizer with Geary connecting with Fisher.
  • Unfortunately, as was the case all day the home side could not ever get on top as Ransom made it 10-9, before Gardner found the response leaving the score 10-10 with less than four to play.
  • The next two minutes saw each keeper notch a save keeping things tied. Then, in the final minute Ripkin forced her way through the DC defense and beat O'Brien for the 11-10 final.
