HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Dickinson women's lacrosse got a combined five goals from the duo of
Heidi Schmidt and
Sage Whiteside, but it was not enough as the 23rd-ranked Haverford College claimed a 12-8 Centennial Conference win at Swan Field on Saturday afternoon.
First Quarter
- Dickinson was under pressure early as the hosts recorded the first four shots with Peyton VanDorpe making a pair of stops, but also allowing two goals to Bella Gattuso for a 2-0 lead four minutes in.Â
- Schmidt posted the first DC shot with 4:16 gone unfortunately Shaina Lewis shut her down.
- The ensuing five shots went the way of the Fords as they kept the Red and White pinned in their own zone ultimately resulting in a tally for Brooke Epstein.Â
- Abby Geary delivered the final marker of the frame as she beat Lewis off a nice dish from Grace Kelly (3-1).
Second Quarter
- The teams traded goals within the first three minutes as Epstein and Schmidt hit the back of the cage for their respective sides.Â
- After a pair of Quinn Foa chances went off the mark, Gattuso went down the other end and extended the margin to 5-2.
- Just a minute following the HC strike Kelly played provider once again this time for Whiteside closing the gap to 5-3.
- Whiteside added one more to her ledger late in the period, but the home team struck three times making it 8-4 going to the break.
Third Quarter
- Dickinson won the opening draw thanks to McKenna Keefer. However, the Red and White could not record a shot which allowed Haverford to back the opposite way and cash in thanks to Gattuso (9-4).
- A couple of minutes later a save by VanDorpe led to Geary connecting with Schmidt for the team's fifth of the day.
- Lewis would prevent DC from getting closer as she denied both Geary and Schmidt, while Epstein put the Fords in double digits at 10-5 with 6:14 to play.
- Mikelle Smith struck with just over a minute left to stretch the advantage to 11-5, before Lewis stopped Geary at the buzzer.
Fourth Quarter
- Lewis continued to be a problem for the Devils at the start of the frame as she posted saves against both Foa and Schmidt within the first three minutes.
- After VanDorpe caused a turnover against Daniela Martini, Meghan McDonal found Schmidt for a goal before Alex Hackett cashed in an unassisted strike to pull the deficit to within 11-7.Â
- Haverford immediately got one of the markers back with Sophie Jaffe tallying 42 seconds later to make it 12-7. However, a giveaway caused by Whiteside resulted in a free-position marker for Schuyler Cerow to set the 12-8 final.
