CARLISLE, Pa. - Dickinson women's lacrosse junior attacker
Abby Geary reached 100 points for her Red Devil career on Saturday afternoon, but the Red Devils season came to an end with a 12-11 non-conference loss to the University of Mary Washington at Biddle Field.
First Quarter
- Dickinson got off to a great start recording the first five shots of the game thanks to Quinn Foa, Eva Gardner, Grace Kelly and Geary. During that stretch both Geary and Kelly beat Cece Van Blenis to take a 2-0 lead five minutes in.
- A minute later Maura Schroeder was denied by Peyton VanDorpe which led to Kelly finding Foa for the Devils third of the game (3-0).
- The Eagles then found some offensive momentum with Abigail Fisher and Ashley Firesheets finding the back of the net cutting the margin to 3-2 with 6:32 left.Â
- Gardner won the ensuing draw control resulting in Foa striking on a free-position shot. The Red and White were not done scoring as Gardner connecting with Kelly to extend the advantage to 5-2 after one.
Second Quarter
- The defense was tight early for the Red and White with both Crawford Fisher and Kelly forcing turnovers allowing for shots from Geary and Kelly that were stopped by Van Blenis.
- A few minutes later VanDorpe shutdown Schroeder leading to Geary setting up Foa for a 6-2 advantage with 4:53 gone.
- UMW then embarked on a three-goal run over a two minute stretch to cut the deficit to just one (6-5) forcing a DC timeout.
- Coming out of the break, Foa won the draw and got the rock to Kelly who found Geary for a 7-5 lead.Â
- Each team added one more goal prior to the halftime horn as tallies by Fisher and Carson Cerow left the Red and White in front 8-6 at half.
Third Quarter
- Things began well for DC with Sage Whiteside popping the ball loose from Molly Ryan Gates resulting in Geary linking up with Fisher for the finish (9-6) less than a minute in.
- The visitors then recorded the ensuing five shots resulting in two saves by VanDorpe, but also three markers for the Eagles to tie the game with five minutes gone.
- Dickinson attempted to regain the lead a few minutes later when Whiteside forced a stop out of Van Blenis. However, UMW used the energy off of that stop to grab two more goals pushing the margin to 11-9 going to the fourth.
Fourth Quarter
- Both keepers were called upon early with Van Blenis denying Gardner, while VanDorpe turned aside Gracie Fugleberg.
- A yellow card given to Kimber Konen set the stage for Geary to find Whiteside for a power play marker trimming the score to 11-10.
- Two minutes later Fugleberg bumped the advantage back to a pair at 12-10 with 6:36 off the clock.
- After a save for VanDorpe on Seanna Ruimerman, Whiteside cashed in on a free-position chance making it 12-11 inside of five minutes to play.
- Cerow had the Devils last opportunity to tie the game, but missed the target ending the game.
