Summer Check-In
Where are you working/interning this summer? Position, Company and Location?
Medical Assistant for Internal Medicine physician, Dr. Van Lomis, in Rosedale, Maryland.
Please describe your day-to-day responsibilities in this position.
I take patient's vitals, do EKGs, and administer vaccines and shots. I also manage patient phone calls by assessing concerns and documenting symptoms. I communicate closely with Dr. Lomis and follow up with patients regarding diagnostic results, treatment plans, medications, and specialist referrals.
What made this experience appealing to you?
This opportunity was exciting because it offers hands-on patient experience, which is my first step to becoming a Physician Assistant. Working in primary care has exposed me to a wide range of experiences, including navigating insurance companies and advocating for patients to obtain treatment approvals, caring for patients with a variety of medical conditions and treatment plans, and developing the ability to interact with patients with compassion and empathy.
How has your athletics career prepared you for this role?
Being a student-athlete has equipped me with the skills to excel in medicine. I thrive in a team environment, collaborating with other MAs and learning from Dr. Lomis. Just like on the basketball court, I have learned to adapt quickly, stay composed, and contribute to a high-volume practice.
Looking forward to this season, what are you most excited about?
I am most excited to kick off my senior season by traveling to Ireland for a tournament in August! I’m grateful for such a close-knit, hardworking team.
