Devils Split Tri-Match with Garnet, Brewers

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Dickinson Volleyball team recorded 14 aces, Mallie Thomas had 33 total kills on the day, and Avery Butcher recorded her 1000th career dig as the Red Devils fell to Swarthmore in their first conference matchup of the season before bouncing back with a non-conference victory over Vassar.

Match One - Garnet 3, DEVILS 1 (SC 22-25, DC 25-15, SC 25-23, SC 25-22)

Set One

  • A back-and-forth start saw neither team score more than 3 points in a row with the Garnet taking a 9-8 lead
  • The Devils then won the next 5 points including two kills by Thomas to take a 13-9 advantage.
  • An ace by Maggie Rankin capped off a 13-5 run by the Garnet to take a 22-18 lead in the set.
  • The teams alternated scores of two each until a kill by Ella Tsai closed the set in the Garnet's favor, 25-22.

Set Two

  • The Devils jumped out to a 6-1 lead with kills from Jessica Currie and Emery Fishbach and an ace from Brenna Williams.
  • The Garnet got as close as 13-10 before the Devils scored 7 consecutive points on a run that featured two kills from Jessica Currie and three from Mallie Thomas.
  • Three different Red Devils recorded a kill in the last three scores for Dickinson, all on assists from Lora Flynn, as the Devils took the set 25-15.

Set Three

  • The Garnet took a 7-3 lead to start and Isabel Adam had three kills in this early run for Swarthmore.
  • The Red Devils tied the set at 11 by way of a 5-0 run featuring two kills from Caroline Cusson.
  • This set remained close, being tied at 23 before the Garnet won the last two points to take the set.

Set Four

  • This set was tied at 10 apiece before a kill by Aiste Bardauskaite capped off a 10-2 Garnet run to put the hosts within 5 points of a win.
  • The Devils came roaring back with their own 7-0 run including kills from Fishbach, Thomas, and Cusson to bring the set score to 20-19 in Swarthmore's favor.
  • This set remained back-and-forth until a kill by Ella Tsai closed the set 25-22, giving the Garnet the set and match victories.

Match Two - DEVILS 3, Brewers 0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-20)

Set One

  • The Devils took a 6-3 lead early and got two aces from Butcher.
  • After the Brewers came back to take a 8-7 lead, a kill and two aces from Thomas put the Devils back in front, 10-8.
  • The Devils would take a 15-10 lead before the Brewers came back again with a 5-1 scoring run of their own including two kills each from Elena Feuer and Eleanor Gegen.
  • The Devils then took 9 of the final 13 points to take the set, including two kills and a block from Currie, aces from Butcher and Lora Flynn, and the final three Red Devil points coming by way of Kylie Schner kills.

Set Two

  • The two sides started out splitting the first 12 scores at six apiece.
  • Vassar jumped out to a 13-8 lead and got aces from Sophia Ierulli and Amy Melchior.
  • The Devils cut the deficit to 13-10, but the Brewers went on a 6-0 scoring run led by three kills and a block from Eleanor Gegen.
  • The Brewers took a 22-14 lead before the Devils scored 10 consecutive points highlighted by three aces from Flynn and two kills by Thomas.
  • The Brewers would score one more point before a bad set by Vassar would close out the second set for the Red Devils. 

Set Three

  • Dickinson would jump out to a 7-2 lead in this set behind two kills and two aces from Thomas.
  • A back-and-forth set, neither team would have any breathing room through 32 points, as the set was tied at 16.
  • Three kills by Norah Oppenheim would help the Devils take a 23-18 lead.
  • An Emery Fishbach kill would put Vassar on the ropes before an attack error by the Brewers would give the Red Devils the set by a score of 25-20.
