(Carlisle, Pa.) – The
Dickinson College football team scored on four of its first five
possessions en route to a 42-14 win over visiting Juniata College
on Friday night. The Red Devils improve to 8-1 on the season and
6-1 in the Centennial Conference. |
The offensive line turned in a dominant performance as the Red
Devils rushed for 339 yards on the night and covered 466 yards of
total offense. Three Red Devils rushed for over 80 yards, led by
junior Tim Smith (Hanover,
Pa./Southwestern) with 92 yards on 14 carries.
Classmate Gregory Lord (Wyomissing,
Pa./Wyomissing) averaged 9.9 yards per carry,
finishing with 89 on just nine attempts.
Senior quarterback Ian Mitchell (Newtown Square,
Pa./Malvern Prep) added 87 yards on 12 carries and
threw for 105 yards and two touchdowns. He rushed for two scores as
well, raising his conference record for rushing TDs by a
quarterback to 14 this season.
Mitchell put the Devils on the board with a nine yard run. He
threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to senior Pat
O'Connor (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East), who made his
return to the line-up. He then hit Craig Helfer (West
Caldwell, N.J./Newark Academy) for a 14-yard strike
to put the Devils on top 21-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Lord and Mitchell scored from six yards and 15 yards,
respectively, in the second quarter to stretch the margin to 35-0
at halftime. Senior Tim Wells (Baltimore, Md./Perry
Hall) found pay dirt in the third quarter to close
out the scoring for Dickinson. Wells finished with 46 yards in the
game.
Juniata's Mike DeTemple (New Cumberland, Pa./Camp Hill)
stepped in temporarily for an injured Alex Snyder (Boalsburg,
Pa./State College) and fired a 13-yard pass to Abram Mellinger
(Ronks, Pa./Lampeter Strasburg) to put the Eagles on the board with
2:48 remaining in the third quarter. Andy Miller blocked a punt and
fell on it in the end zone with 2:44 left in the game to make the
final 42-14.
Sophomore Corwyn Gordon (Hanover,
Pa./Southwestern)anchored the defensive effort with a
team-high eight tackles, including
two-for-losses. Pete Hamill (Downingtown,
Pa./Downingtown West) and Mike Byrnes
(Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick) each added six
stops.
Pat McNeal (Glen Mills,
Pa./Archmere) returned an interception 34 yards and
added an eight-year tackle for loss. Scott Sullivan
(Coatesville, Pa./Bishop
Shanahan) and Matt DeStefano (Berwyn,
Pa./Conestoga) also tallied interceptions on the
evening while Keegan Ash (Pottstown, Pa/The Hill
School) chipped in with a 10-yard
sack. Gordon Craig (Grove City, Pa/Grove
City)was perfect on extra points, going 6-for-6.
Jason Marquis (Jeannette, Pa/Jeannette) led the Eagles with a
game-high 13 tackles while Tyler Hall (Alexandria, Pa./Juniata
Valley) added 12.
The Red Devils are home again next week, hosting Ursinus College
in the regular season finale at 1:00 pm on Saturday.
