College football team used a balanced attack on both offense and
defense to hold #17-ranked Hobart College to just a field-goal in a
26-3 win at Biddle Field. |
Junior running back Gregory Lord (Wyomissing,
Pa./Wyomissing) rushed for a game-high 117 yards and
a touchdown on 14 carries. Tim Smith (Hanover,
Pa./Southwestern) ran for 59 yards
and Tim Wells (Baltimore, Md./Perry
Hall) added 53 to the Devils' ground game.
Senior quarterback Ian Mitchell (Newtown Square,
Pa./Malvern Prep) picked his moments on Saturday,
running for 66 yards and a pair of touchdowns to go with 85 yards
passing and another score.
The Dickinson defense was solid in the red zone, recovering a
fumble on the 10 yard line and breaking up a great pass into the
corner of the endzone. Pat McNeal (Glen Mills,
Pa./Archmere)led the way with 10 stops while
sophomore Andrew Fink (Schuylkill Haven,
Pa./Schuylkill Haven) made nine tackles and recovered
the fumble to stall the Hobart drive early in the second
quarter.
Kevin Wood (Westford,
Mass./Phillips) and Michael Maxwell
(Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) each tallied eight
tackles and seniorMatt DeStefano (Berwyn,
Pa./Conestoga) made a great play to break up a
touchdown pass.
Following a scoreless first quarter, the Devils put together an
88-yard scoring drive. Mitchell connected with
junior Gabe Cazares (Bowie,
Md./Bowie) for 29 yards and senior Joe
Sandoe (Myerstown, Pa./Elco) for 24 yards to move the
Devils to the Hobart 33 yard line.
Mitchell then hit tackle-eligible Anthony Abbate
(Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield) in the flat for a
seven yard gain. Mitchell scored on fourth-and-one to put Dickinson
on the board with 4:37 remaining in the half.
The Statesmen drove deep into Devil territory as time was
winding down in the half. The defense stalled the drive on the
seven, forcing Hobart to settle for a 25 yard field-goal to end the
half.
Dickinson scored on its first two possessions of the second half
as Lord broke free for a 39 yard touchdown and Mitchell scrambled
in with a great run from 19 yards out to put the Devils in control,
20-3, at the end of the third quarter.
The Dickinson defense forced the Statesmen to attempt another
field-goal in the fourth quarter. This one sailed wide left, giving
the Devils the ball on their own 22 yard line.
Wells found a hole and ran 33 yards to help later set-up a three
yard pass from Mitchell to Sandoe, closing out the scoring for the
day with just over five minutes remaining in the game.
The Red Devil offensive line turned in an outstanding
performance as the Devils rushed for 298 yards on the day and had
no turnovers.
Quarterback Doug Vella (Franklin Sqaure, N.Y./Chaminade) led
Hobart with 79 yards rushing and 65 yards in the air. Kyle
O'Laughlin (Syracuse, N.Y./Onondaga) recorded a game-high 12
tackles. Mike Faracca (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville East)
blocked a pair of extra-points.
The Red Devils (2-0) open Centennial Conference play next
weekend. They travel to Lancaster to battle Franklin & Marshall
for the Conestoga Wagon on Saturday. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00
pm.
