(Carlisle, Pa.)- The Dickinson
College football team improved to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the
Centennial Conference with an impressive 35-7 win over McDaniel
College. |
The Red Devil defense had its hands full right out of the gate
as a high snap on a punt gave the McDaniel the ball on the
Dickinson 16 yard line on their opening possession. The Green
Terror moved the ball to the six before the Devils forced a 23-yard
field-goal attempt.
Junior Pete Hamill (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown
West) and Michael Maxwell (Coatesville,
Pa/Coatesville) broke through and blocked the attempt
to keep the Terror off the scoreboard.
Senior quarterback Ian Mitchell (Newtown Square,
Pa./Malvern Prep) promptly broke free for a 67-yard
touchdown just four plays later to put the Devils on the board,
7-0.
Mitchell added another score from 13 yards out to give the
Devils a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Senior wide
receiver Matt Cahill (Broomall, Pa./Haverford
Twp) made a great catch in the end zone for the
Terror's lone score of the day, cutting the deficit to 14-7 at the
11:42 mark of the second quarter.
Mitchell answered three possessions later to make the score 21-7
at halftime. The Red Devils added a five-yard touchdown pass
toPat O'Connor (Exton, Pa./Downingtown
East) in the third quarter and Tim Smith
(Hanover, Pa./Southwestern) scored on an 18-yard run
in the closing minutes of the game.
It was a big day for the Red Devils on both offense and defense.
Mitchell led all rushers with 126 yards and three touchdowns. He
moves into sixth on the school's all-time rushing list with 2,172.
He also became the first Dickinson quarterback to pass for over
4,000 yards (4,050), completing 17-of-28 passes for 156 yards and
one score.
O'Connor had a banner day as well, setting a school record with
14 catches on the day. He covered 136 yards and had a touchdown. He
becomes Dickinson's all-time leader in receptions with 149, raising
his career record to 2,308 yards.
Senior Tim Wells (Baltimore, Md./Perry
Hall) made the most of his 11 carries, running for 72
yards on the day. He went over the 1,000-yard mark for his career,
rushing for 1,036 yards.
Smith did most of his damage on the last possession, he finished
the day with 70 yards on just eight carries, averaging 8.8 yards
per touch.
The Devils totaled 412 yards of offense, rushing for 256 on the
day while adding 156 though the air.
The Devil defense turned in a great performance as well,
stopping the Terror from the 16 on the opening drive. The went on
to hold McDaniel to just 93 yards rushing and 138 through the
air.
Keegan Ash (Pottstown, Pa./Hill
School) earned the start and led the way with six
tackles, 1.5 for-losses, a forced fumble, fumble recovery and a
pass break-up. The Red Devils tallied three interceptions,
including one that was returned 52 yards by Mike
Byrnes (Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick School).
Jack Connolly (Wexford, Pa./N.
Allegheny) and Kevin Wood (Westford,
Mass./Phillips) each recorded seven tackles. Maxwell
added five tackles, an interception and four break-ups on the
day.Pat McNeal (Glen Mills, Pa./Archmere) had
five tackles and intercepted a pass in the end zone.
The Red Devils improve to 4-0 on the season and 2-0 in the
Centennial Conference. They travel to Moravian College next
Saturday for a 1:00 kick-off.
