split the series with a 72-70 win on Tuesday night. |
The Garnet struck first and led throughout the first half,
stretching the margin to as many as 10 in the opening stanza. The
Red Devils rallied to cut the deficit to 33-29 at halftime.
After the break, the Garnet built the lead again, holding a nine
point advantage at the 16:04 and pulling in front 60-47 with 8:37
remaining in regulation.
The Red Devils turned up the pressure again, tying the game at
4:54 with a 12-0 run. Junior guard Brooke Muller
(Northampton, Pa./Whitehall) drained a three-pointer
to knot the game at 62-62.
Trailing by six, first-year Lindsay Finnerty
(Tenafly, N.J./Tenafly)was fouled on a rebound. She
converted both free throws to pull the Devils within four.
Dickinson forced a pair of turnovers and
junior Alesha Sisco (Effort, Pa./Blair
Academy) scored on the inbounds pass to make the
score 70-68 with 41 seconds on the clock.
The Devils fouled and the Garnet missed, putting the rebound in
the hands of Carole Dempsey (Potomac, Md./Winston
Churchill). Dempsey scored to tie the game again, 70-70,
with an assist from Taylor Miller (Red Lion, Pa./Red
Lion) with just 10 seconds to play.
Ceylan Bodur (Istanbul, Turkey/Robert College) answered with a
lay-up, scoring with just four seconds on the clock.
Following a timeout, Lisa Schumacher (Middlebury,
Conn./Westover) intercepted the inbounds pass and was immediately
fouled with three seconds left to play.
The Garnet missed again and Finnerty pulled the rebound but was
unable to get a decent look at the basket for a final shot.
Dempsey finished with a game-high 19 points, hitting 8-of-11
shots from the floor. She added seven rebounds, four steals and a
pair of assists. Sisco tallied 18 points and six rebounds, going a
perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Finnerty reached
double-figures with 11 points, going 5-for-5 from the stripe.
Kathryn Stockbower (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin) led
Swarthmore (6-7, 3-5) with 16 points and 12 rebounds.
The Red Devils slip to 8-4 overall and 4-4 in the Centennial
Conference. They travel to Washington College on Thursday. The game
time has been changed to 6:00 pm.
