(Carlisle, Pa.) - The Dickinson College women's field hockey
team suffered a tough loss in the home finale, falling 2-0 to
visiting Gettysburg on Tuesday. The Bullets scored both goals
late in the second half to improve to 6-3 in the Centennial
Conference and 8-8 overall. Dickinson falls to 2-7, and 3-13
overall.
The seniors were again recognized as they took to the Biddle
Field turf for the final time this season. The first half of
the game was a defensive battle for the Red Devils. Sophomore
goaltender Ioni Kokdis
(Jefferson, N.J./Pope John XXII) held her own against a
barrage of shots, saving 13 on the day. Senior Laura
Romano (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) and sophomore
Laura
Hitchings (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin) were yet
again solid on defense as they each worked within the circle to
stall the Bullet attack.
The Devils seemed to find their feet offensively as the second
half began with a spark. Both teams fought hard for possession as
Dickinson managed to fire off a couple of strong shots in the
opening minutes.
The net remained elusive, however, and the first goal was scored
by Gettysburg in the 49th minute. Liz Baron took two shots that
were saved by Kokdis before Annie Marosits sunk the ball in to the
far side of the cage. The Devils remained persistent but Erica
Barbuto finished off the day with a redirect off of a shot by Sarah
Cole with just 1:53 left in the game.
The Red Devils travel to Washington College for their final game
of the season on Saturday. Game time is set for 1:00 pm.
