(Carlisle, Pa.) The Dickinson College women's field hockey
team started off strong, scoring the game's first goal, but could
not hold on as they fell to Swarthmore College, 2-1 on Saturday
afternoon.
The Red Devil offense controlled the field for most of the first
half. Sophomore Tanya
Bellingham (Alexandria, Va./Annandale) scored the only
goal of the day for the Devils. The goal was off of a penalty
stroke late in the first half with just under three minutes to
play.
Following halftime the Garnet quickly regained their composure
and answered with a goal from Aarti Rao in the 46th
minute. The score came off of a quick tap by Allison Ranshous from
a penalty corner taken by Sophia Ferguson. Nia Jones then scored an
unassisted goal at 58:17 to put the Garnet on top, 2-1.
Sophomore Laura
Hitchings (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin) and
senior Laura Romano
(Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) were key players on
defense, each recording a defensive save. First-year goalkeeper
Katy
Schlechtweg (Mount Laurel, N.J./Moorestown Friends)
had another solid showing, saving five shots on the day.
Katie Ashmore made seven saves as Swarthmore improves to 2-2 in
the Centennial Conference and 5-6 overall.
Dickinson falls to 1-3 in the CC and 2-9 overall. On Wednesday
the Red Devils will travel to Westminster, Maryland face McDaniel
College at 7:00 pm.
