(Carlisle, Pa.) - The Dickinson
College women's basketball team held off a tenacious effort by Bryn
Mawr to post a 60-54 win on Sunday afternoon. |
The Owls capitalized early as the Devils shot just 20 percent in
the first half. Bryn Mawr pulled in front 13-8 at the 10 minute
mark.
The Devils answered to take a 19-18 lead at the break as both
teams struggled from the field. Dickinson also struggled from the
free throw line, not typical of the Red Devils.
In the second half the Devils stretched the lead to six, but
could not pull away from the feisty Owls. Bryn Mawr stayed within
striking distance, trailing by just a bucket, 47-45, with 4:15
remaining in regulation.
Junior Carole Dempsey (Potomac, Md./Winston
Churchill) went on a run of her own, putting the
Devils in front 54-47 with two lay-ups, a jumper and a free throw
with 2:09 on the clock.
The Owls made one last run, cutting the deficit to 56-54 with 29
seconds remaining in regulation. Alesha Sisco (Effort,
Pa./Blair Academy) and Belma Mekic (Camp
Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff)combined for two rebounds and 4-of-6
free throws in the final seconds to help secure the win.
Dempsey led the Devils with 21 points, seven rebounds and four
steals. Sisco posted a double-double with 17 points and 13
rebounds, including six on the offensive glass. She added a
game-high five steals on the night as well.
Mekic was strong on the boards from her guard position,
controlling six rebounds to go with three steals and two
assists.Brooke Muller (Northampton,
Pa./Whitehall) tallied eight points and handed out
four assists.
Lindsay Darvin (Gladstone, N.J./Bernards) led the Owls (2-19,
0-17) with 22 points. Shanika Bridges-King) scored 12 points, had a
game-high 15 rebounds, adding five assists and four steals.
The Red Devils improve to 14-7 overall and 10-7 in the
Centennial Conference. They are home next Saturday, hosting
Washington College at 2:00 pm.
The teams also celebrated the Women's Basketball Coaches
Association Pink Zone Initiative on Sunday. The event helps raise
awareness for the fight against breast cancer. Cancer survivors
were honored after the game and money was raised to donate to the
Kay Yow WBCA Cancer Fund. On behalf of Dickinson College and the
women's basketball team, thank you to all who were able to
attend.
