(Collegeville, Pa.) The Dickinson College field hockey team
suffered a tough shutout loss to #4-ranked Ursinus as the Bears
remain undefeated in the Centennial Conference at 3-0, improving to
6-1 overall.
The Bears put the pressure on Dickinson early with Corrine
Freeman scoring both of her two goals within the first 15 minutes
of play. Each score came off of an assist from Megan Yoder.
Jennifer Bayzick stretched the lead to 3-0 in the 20th minute and
Michelle Wimmer added an unassisted goal with just 45 seconds left
in the half, making the score 4-0 at the break.
Wimmer came back with another goal and an assist on the next two
scores for the Bears. The scoring ceased at 62:36 as Yoder drove in
the final goal off of a penalty corner.
The Red Devils appeared to spoil the shutout in the late
minutes, but the goal was disallowed, securing the shutout for
Ursinus.
First-year goaltender Katy
Schlechtweg (Mount Laurel, N.J./Moorestown Friends)
played hard, marking 21 saves in 63 minutes. Classmate Ioni Kokdis
(Jefferson, N.J./Pope John XXIII) saw her first minutes in
goal as she finished out the game for Dickinson. Laura
Hitchings (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin) also
played well defensively for the Devils.
The Bears held a 44-0 advantage in shots and forced 23 penalty
corners while allowing just one on the defensive end.
The Red Devils fall to 0-1 in the CC and 1-6 overall. They
return home to battle Johns Hopkins on Tuesday at 4:00 pm.
