(Carlisle, Pa.) - The Dickinson College field hockey team
suffered a 3-1 loss to visiting Johns Hopkins in Centennial
Conference play here on Wednesday.
The Red Devils took control of the game early, forcing a pair of
penalty corners in the opening minutes. The Blue Jays gained
control midway through the period, scoring back-to-back goals in a
span of just over one minute. Carly Bianco put Hopkins on the board
in the 16th minute and Meghan Kellett tallied another unassisted
goal just 1:21 later to stretch the margin to 2-0.
Sarah Jacobs finished a beautiful pass from Jennifer Motlyinski
to give the Blue Jays a 3-0 advantage with 6:54 remaining in the
first half. The Devils continued to battle, forcing a penalty
corner as time expired. Senior Leah Kaplan
(Montclair, N.J./Montclair) fired a shot off the
goaltender that rebounded to junior Katie Mersky
(Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Country Day). Mersky rattled the
back of the cage to make the score 3-1 at the break.
The defenses dominated play in the second half as both teams
were held scoreless. Senior Laura Romano
(Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) and Laura
Hitchings (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin) both
played well for the Devils, holding the Hopkins attack in
check.
First-year Katy
Schlechtweg (Mount Laurel, N.J./Moorestown Friends)
turned in another strong performance in goal, making eight saves on
the day.
Kim Stein stopped seven shots in goal for Johns Hopkins (4-4,
2-1).
The Red Devils are home again on Saturday, hosting Muhlenberg
College at 11:00 am.
