(Carlisle, Pa.) - The Dickinson College field hockey team suffered a 3-1 loss to visiting Johns Hopkins in Centennial Conference play here on Wednesday.

The Red Devils took control of the game early, forcing a pair of penalty corners in the opening minutes. The Blue Jays gained control midway through the period, scoring back-to-back goals in a span of just over one minute. Carly Bianco put Hopkins on the board in the 16th minute and Meghan Kellett tallied another unassisted goal just 1:21 later to stretch the margin to 2-0.

Sarah Jacobs finished a beautiful pass from Jennifer Motlyinski to give the Blue Jays a 3-0 advantage with 6:54 remaining in the first half. The Devils continued to battle, forcing a penalty corner as time expired. Senior Leah Kaplan (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) fired a shot off the goaltender that rebounded to junior Katie Mersky (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Country Day). Mersky rattled the back of the cage to make the score 3-1 at the break.

The defenses dominated play in the second half as both teams were held scoreless. Senior Laura Romano (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) and Laura Hitchings (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin) both played well for the Devils, holding the Hopkins attack in check.

First-year Katy Schlechtweg (Mount Laurel, N.J./Moorestown Friends) turned in another strong performance in goal, making eight saves on the day.

Kim Stein stopped seven shots in goal for Johns Hopkins (4-4, 2-1).

The Red Devils are home again on Saturday, hosting Muhlenberg College at 11:00 am.
