(Carlisle, Pa) – The Dickinson College women's basketball team suffered a 67-65 overtime loss on Saturday as Johns Hopkins rallied late to remain in first place in the Centennial Conference standings.
The Red Devils jumped out to a six point lead, which would be the largest of the half, at the 11:58 mark. The game saw five ties in the opening 20 minutes with Dickinson holding a 21-19 advantage at halftime.
That trend continued into the second half as the teams traded baskets, playing to a 34-34 tie with 12:20 remaining in regulation. The Red Devils went on a 10-2 run to stretch a two-point lead to double-figures at 50-40, with 4:11 on the clock.
A pair of layups from Fatu Conteh and a three-pointer by Chantal Mattiola helped the Blue Jays battle back to within a basket, cutting the deficit to 55-53 with just over a minute to play. The Red Devils had possession but turned the ball over with 33 seconds left. Sophomore forward Alex Vassila sank a turnaround jumper to knot the game once again with just 15 seconds to play. The Devils called another timeout with three seconds remaining but were unable to net the game-winner in regulation.
The teams traded baskets again early in the overtime period. Hopkins gained a three-point edge on a Lyndsay Burton lay-up, making the score 63-60 with 2:18 to play. Senior Alesha Sisco (Effort, Pa./Blair Academy) hit one-of-two free throws to pull the Devils within two at the 1:31 mark.
Junior Stephanie Fong sandwiched four free throws around a Dana Walsh (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) lay-up in the final 31 seconds as the Blue Jays held on for the 67-65 win.
Sisco finished with a game-high 24 points, hitting 12-of-13 free throws and shooting 6-for-9 from the field. She added four steals and four rebounds as well. Walsh tallied 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting while controlling four rebounds as well.
Junior Taylor Miller (Red Lion, Pa/Red Lion) added 11 points and six rebounds, hitting 4-of-6 field-goals on the afternoon. Senior Carole Dempsey (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) chipped in with seven points.
The Red Devils shot a remarkable 73 percent from the floor in the second half, hitting 11-of-15 field-goals. They hit 9-of-11 free throws and held a 32-23 advantage on the boards.
Vassila led Hopkins (14-3, 11-2) with 16 points and 11 rebounds, adding three blocked shots and a pair of steals. Conteh and Fong each finished with 13 points.
The Red Devils (7-9, 5-7 CC) are on the road on Wednesday, traveling to Gettysburg College for a double-header with the men, tipping-off at 6:00 pm.
