(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson College women's lacrosse team held its own in the early going against 14-ranked Catholic University, but fell in the end, 10-5.
The teams traded goal-for-goal in the first half, playing to a 4-4 tie at the break. Eight different players scored in the opening half as both teams used balanced attacks and solid defense to keep the score even.
Junior Taryn Abbassian (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) gave the Devils a brief 5-4 advantage early in the second half, scoring on a free position at the 20:47 mark. The Cardinals wasted little time netting the equalizer as Gretchen Wade finished an assist from Mary Swartout just 59 seconds later.
Catholic would go on to tally five unanswered goals in the second half to secure a 10-5 win as they improve to 2-1 on the season.
Swartout led the Cardinals with two goals and two assists while Meghan Brady scored a pair as well. Becky Borrell controlled five ground balls while Gabby Sena made a pair of saves to earn the win in goal.
Abbassian led the Red Devils with a pair of free position goals, adding a pair of caused turnovers. Maggie Peeke (Exeter, N.H./Exeter) caused a pair of turnovers and controlled three ground balls. Senior goaltender Jessie Clark (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) finished with 14 saves, four ground balls and two caused turnovers.
The Red Devils slip to 3-4 overall. They are home again on Wednesday, hosting St. Mary's College of Maryland at 1:00 pm.
