(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson College baseball team tried to rally, but suffered a 6-5 setback to Lebanon Valley on Tuesday afternoon. The Red Devils slip to 13-4 overall after posting an 8-2 record in Florida last week.
Lebanon Valley capitalized on timely hitting in the second inning to put one run on the board. They pulled out the textbook to add one in the second to lead 2-0. Derek Brousseau led-off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a single from Aaron Mills.
The Red Devils rallied with two outs in the third, tying the game on a two-run single down the left field line by junior shortstop Jordan Kaufman (Somerset, Pa./Somerset Area). Sophomore James Santoro (Freehold, N.J./St. Rose) triggered the rally with a single and stolen base. Garrett Horan (Providence, R.I./Moses Brown) singled and Tyler Rosa' (Carmel, Calif./Stevenson School) drew a walk to load the bases for Kaufman.
Dickinson gained the lead in the fourth as Matt Tuneski (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) walked, stole second and scored on a double by Mike Schuster (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley).
The Ducthmen regained the lead, scoring three unearned runs in the sixth to pull in front, 5-3. They added another unearned run in the eighth as Colt Zarilla singled and later advanced to third on an error. He came across on a sacrifice fly from Jordan Witmer to stretch the lead to 6-3.
The Devils chipped away at the lead, scoring with two outs in the eighth. Andrew Sterling (Houston, Texas/Episcopal) singled up the middle and stole second. He would come around to score off the bat of Schuster to pull the Devils within a pair at 6-4.
The Devils held in the top of the ninth as the Dutchmen went three up-three down in the inning. The Devils found themselves down to their last out once again, but capitalized on a Dutchmen error to bring in Kaufman to cut the lead to one. Kaufman singled and reached second on a mishandled ball at second. He would score on a single from Tuneski, but Lebanon Valley would hold on for the final out.
Jake Becker earned the win for Lebanon Valley (8-7), recording 10 strikeouts on the day. Mills and Jordan Higgins each recorded two hits for the Dutchmen.
Andrew Mauro (Washington, D.C./Mercersburg) turned in six strong innings while Evan Fitzpatrick (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) and Sean White (Summit, N.J./Salisbury) combined for four strikeouts in three innings of relief.
Kaufman went 3-for-5 on the day, recording a pair of RBIs and scoring once. Schuster went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs as well while Santoro added a pair of base-hits. Tuneski added a single, reaching safely three times, scoring once and driving in another.
