Big Run, Strong Defense Lead Devils Past Mules

(Allentown, Pa.)  - The Dickinson College women's lacrosse team erupted for eight straight goals to open the second half, breaking open a 6-5 game en route to a 17-9 win at Muhlenberg on Tuesday afternoon.

 

The Red Devils had a strong start in the first half as well, putting up the first three goals of the game. Senior Kelsey Muir (Glen Mills, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) struck just 1: 27 into the contest. Classmate Sunnie Ko (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) found the net at the 25:51 mark and finished an assist from Kaity Moore (Chestertown, Md./St. Andrew's,  Del.) just over three minutes later.

 

Molly Davin tallied the first of four Muhlenberg goals at the 18:11 mark to make the score, 3-1. Lucy West (Bethesda, Md./Holton-Arms) answered with 14:39 remaining, off an assist from Kara Glazer (Towson, Md./Towson) before a 4-0 run by the Mules put them in front, 5-4 at the two minute mark.

 

Danielle Rosen scored twice and tallied an assist in the run while Davin assisted Rosen and then added another of her own to knot the game at 4-4.

 

Ko returned the favor with an assist to Moore and then scored on a Sara Braniecki (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur) assist in the final 1:16 to put Dickinson in front at halftime, 6-5.

 

The Devils would finish a 10-0 run, scoring the first eight after the break. Ella Cough (Chicago, Ill./St. Ignatius College Prep) started the scoring in the second half with a goal just 26 seconds after the draw.

 

 Junior Taryn Abbassian (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) dished out three assists in the run. Braniecki scored back-to-back goals and later assisted Abbassian for her 27th of the season. Muir added two goals while Glazer tallied a goal and an assist.

 

The Mules strung together three straight to cut the deficit to 16-9 with 3:33 remaining in the game. Moore closed out the scoring at the 3:03 mark for the final of 17-9.

 

Ko led the way with four goals and one assist while Moore and Braniecki each tallied a pair of goals and two assists. Abbassian finished with a goal and three assists to go with four draw controls.

 

Muir netted a hat-trick, adding four draws, a caused turnover and a ground ball. West controlled three ground balls, scoring three goals as well on the day.

 

Amanda Morse (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) made five saves while Jessie Clark (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) stopped three shots and controlled three ground balls. First-year Brett Whelan (Arlington, Mass./Arlington) and senior Allie Menchel (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen's/St. Agnes) combined for 10 ground balls.

 

Davin led Muhlenberg (7-7, 3-5 CC) with four goals and one assist. Allison Vachon made five saves in goal.

 

The Red Devils improve to 6-9 overall and 3-4 in the Centennial Conference. They return home to finish a suspended game with Swarthmore on Wednesday at 7:00 pm. The game will resume with 16:06 remaining in the first half.
