(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson College field hockey team handed first-year head coach Caitlin Williams her first career win, turning back Bridgewater College, 2-1, in the season opener on Friday afternoon.

First-year Celeste Pilato (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) led the way, scoring both Devil goals in her collegiate debut. She put the Devils on the board early, finishing an assist from senior Lauren Kelly (Lititz, Pa./Warwick). She struck again just 59 seconds later with another pass from Kelly to give the Devils a 2-0 advantage with 24 minutes remaining in the first half.

The Devils controlled play for the better part of the game, holding off the Bridgewater attack with solid defense in the midfield and the defensive circle.

The Eagles finally broke through late in the second half. Kelly Ryan collected a rebound on a great diving save by sophomore Katy Schlectweg (Mount Laurel, N.J./Moorestown Friends) and found the back of the cage to cut the lead to 2-1 with 6:17 to play in regulation.

Junior Laura Hitchings (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin) and sophomore Fallon Winters (Spring Lake, N.J./Northfield Mount Hermon) anchored the solid defensive effort, each recording key defensive saves in the second half.

Schlectweg made five saves on the afternoon while Bridgewater's Taylor Waddell stopped nine shots for the Eagles. The Devils held an 18-16 advantage in shots while the Eagles edged the Devils in penalty corners, 8-6.

The Red Devils (1-0) are home again on Saturday, hosting Eastern Mennonite at 4:00 pm.
