(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson College men's soccer team held its own against the #2-ranked Falcons of Messiah College on Tuesday night. The Falcons would remain unbeaten, however, posting a 4-1 win at Dickinson Park.
Messiah slipped in an own goal off a free kick just 2:28 into the contest. A hard serve deflected off a Red Devil defender into the net to put the Falcons on the board early. They stretched the lead to 2-0 in the 20th minute as Jack Thompson scored off an assist from Danny Thompson.
The Red Devils capitalized on a free-kick as well to cut the deficit to 2-1. Senior Taylor Ferry (Wyndmoor, Pa./Chestnut Hill Academy) tallied his second goal off a header in as many games, redirecting a beautifully served ball from sophomore Luca May (Mt. Holly, N.J./Rancocas Valley) with 12:54 remaining in the first half.
Senior Derek Black extended the Falcon lead to 3-1, just three minutes into the second half, breaking through in transition to give Messiah some insurance as the Red Devils continued to make attacking runs.
Jack Thompson added an assist, putting a ball to the head of Jordan Sands in the 85th minute for the final goal of the night.
Junior Cody Hickok (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) made 10 saves in goal for the Red Devils, stopping five shots in each half. Jake Berry made a pair of saves in the nets for Messiah (6-0-1).
The Red Devils slip to 4-2-2 on the season. They return to Centennial Conference play on Saturday with another tough test as Swarthmore College, ranked 10th in the NSCAA National Poll this week, comes to town for homecoming weekend. Kick-off is scheduled for 2:30 pm.
