(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson College field hockey team suffered a 4-2 setback on Friday afternoon, falling to Swarthmore College.
The Garnet struck first as Sophia Agathis scored unassisted on the 15th minute. The Red Devils answered 10 minutes later when senior Lauren Kelly (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) collected her own rebound off a blocked shot and finished in the back of the cage to tie the game.
Senior Katie Mersky (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Country Day) made a great dodge in the circle to put the Devils in front, 2-1 with 8:41 remaining on the first half.
Julia Tallarico tied the game off a penalty corner, scoring off a double-assist from Anne Rosenblatt and Allison Ranshous with 4:31 to play in the half. Nia Jones regained the lead for Swarthmore, scoring off a rebounded shot by Agathis in the 44th minute. Agathis would connect with Rosenblatt and Ranshous on penalty corner with just over 21 minutes remaining in regulation to close out the scoring.
Tallarico also recorded a defensive save on the other end of the field while Gabriella Capone made 10 saves in the cage for the Garnet.
Junior Laura Hitchings (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin) anchored a solid defensive effort while Tanya Bellingham (Alexandria, Va./Annandale) played well in the midfield. Sophomore goaltender Katy Schlechtweg (Mount Laurel, N.J./Moorestown Friends) made eight saves for the Red Devils.
Dickinson slips to 2-5 overall and 0-3 in the Centennial Conference. They travel to Muhlenberg College next Friday for a 7:00 pm start against the Mules.
