(Allentown, Pa.) – The Dickinson College field hockey team struck first, but suffered a heartbreaking loss at Muhlenberg, falling 4-3 on Friday night.
The Red Devils went in front on a goal from sophomore Katie Langan (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales), scoring off an assist from junior Alex Boorse (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) in the 22nd minute.
The Mules answered with a three-goal flurry to take a 3-1 lead at halftime. Heather Procini scored a pair of goals in a span of 3:14 to put Muhlenberg in front 2-1. Kayleigh Thies stretched the margin to 3-1 with an assist from Erin Cummings with just two seconds remaining in the period.
Thies assisted Devon Barber in the 41st minute to extend the Mules' lead to 4-1.
The Devils would rally however, as Boorse scored on an assist from senior Lauren Kelly (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) a little over a minute later.
Kelly ripped a shot into the cage on a penalty corner, scoring off an assist from classmate Claire Mammen (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Governor Livingston) with 13:21 remaining in the game.
The Red Devils held a 17-16 advantage in shots and a 16-12 edge in corners on the night. Kristen Dornenburg made 10 saves in goal for Muhlenberg. Sophomore Katy Schlechtweg (Mount Laurel, N.J./Moorestown Friends) made eight stops for the Devils.
The Red Devils slip to 3-6 overall and 0-4 in the Centennial Conference. They return home to host McDaniel College on Wednesday at 4:00 pm.
