(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's soccer team celebrated the opening of the Phyllis Joan Miller Memorial soccer complex with a 2-1 win over visiting Johns Hopkins University on Saturday afternoon. The Red Devils scored a pair of second half goals, striking early in the half and netting the game-winner with just 1:51 remaining in regulation.
Following a scoreless first half, the Red Devils struck almost immediately after the break. Senior Shepherd Waldenberger (Madison, Va./Madison) broke through to score unassisted, just 2:37 after intermission.
The Devils had a chance to stretch the lead with 28:07 remaining, drawing a penalty kick. Senior goaltender Nick Cerrone made the save, however, to keep the score, 1-0. Josh Hong would tie the game with just under 20 minutes to play, scoring unassisted to pull the Blue Jays even.
The Red Devils were not about to let the inaugural match on Miller Field get away from them, answering with just 1:51 remaining in regulation. Derek Kachadurian (Weston, Mass./Weston) finished on a great feed from junior Javier Mena (San Salvador, El Salvador/The American School) to put Dickinson back on top, 2-1.
That would be the final as the Devils come out on top in their new home at Dickinson Park. The Devils held an 18-11 advantage in shots and a slim edge in corners, 6-4.
Cerrone finished with five saves as Hopkins drops to 5-6-2 overall and 3-2-1 in the Centennial Conference. Senior Cody Hickok (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) made six saves in the nets for Dickinson. The Red Devils improve to 9-3-2 overall and 4-1-1 in the conference.
The Red Devils travel to Ursinus College next Saturday to face the Bears at 12:00 pm.
