(Chestertown, Md.) – The Dickinson field hockey team struck first and struck early at Washington College, but the host Shorewomen regrouped for a 5-2, Centennial Conference win on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Natalie Polk (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) scored off her own rebound, just 4:26 into the game, to put the Red Devils on the board, 1-0.
Washington answered with a pair of goals in a span of just 2:02 to take a 2-1 lead. Erin Lewns capitalized on a penalty stroke in the 13th minute to even the score before Kristen Wille found the back of the cage with 21:26 remaining in the half.
The Shorewomen tacked on an insurance goal in the 49th minute as Heather Noto tallied off another rebound to stretch the lead to 3-1. Senior Alex Boorse (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) rattled the cage to bring the Devils back within a goal in the 55th minute, scoring from just inside the circle.
The hosts would capitalize on a pair of penalty strokes in the final 10 minutes to secure a 5-2 win. Lewns converted the first with 7:22 remaining in regulation and Hilary Manion closed out the scoring on another with just one second on the clock.
Washington held a 36-13 advantage in shots and a 21-4 edge in corners as junior goaltender Katy Schlechtweg (Mount Laurel, N.J./Moorestown Friends) made 18 saves on the afternoon.
Stephanie Harryman made five saves for Washington as they improve to 8-6 overall and 4-2 in the Centennial Conference.
The Red Devils slip to 6-8 overall and 1-6 in conference play. They return home to face Johns Hopkins University on Wednesday at 3:30 pm.
