Devils Rally Three Times to Top Hopkins in Overtime 4-3

Box Score

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson field hockey team rallied from behind on three separate occasions to force overtime before finishing off visiting Johns Hopkins in the 83rd minute. The Red Devils answered three times en route to a, 4-3, Centennial Conference win on Wednesday afternoon.

The Blue Jays struck first, scoring in the ninth minute as Alexa Lantiere scored off an assist from Sam Stuek to put Hopkins on the board. The Devils capitalized on a penalty stroke just under three minutes later, to pull even, 1-1. First-year Caroline Karwel (Fairfax Station, Va./South County Secondary) found the back of the cage to knot the game.

Meghan Kellett put the Blue Jays back in front, scoring unassisted with 9:23 remaining in the first half. Hopkins held a 2-1 lead as the teams went into the break.

First-year Alyssa Stillwell (Shamong, N.J./Seneca) pulled the Devils even with an unassisted goal in the 47th minute, picking up a rebound and ripping a shot into the net. Just under 10 minutes later, the Blue Jays would answer once again, scoring off a penalty corner with 12:23 remaining in regulation. Liane Tellier inserted the corner and received a return pass from Elena Gresick that she blasted into the cage for a 3-2 advantage.

Stillwell was the answer once again, scoring a truly brilliant goal while essentially lying on her back in the circle. Sophomore Alexandra Becker (Spring House, Pa./Germantown Academy) played a big cross in from the right side. As Stillwell went to play the ball, she went down as the goalkeeper came out to make a play. Looking almost helpless for just a second, Stillwell reached back and remarkably, somehow struck the ball into the cage with just 1:50 to play in regulation.

The teams went back-and-forth in the early going of overtime with Hopkins holding a majority of the possession. The Devils broke free and moved the ball into their attacking third. Becker came up big once again, finding first-year Allison Forhan (Hudson, Ohio/Western Reserve), who rattled the cage with the game-winner with 2:04 remaining in the first overtime period.

The Blue Jays held the advantage in shots, 29-14, and had a 15-6 edge in penalty corners, but the Devils made their opportunities count when they needed them. Junior goaltender Katy Schlechtweg (Mount Laurel, N.J./Moorestown Friends) made 15 saves for the Red Devils.

Eliza Peijenburg made five saves for Johns Hopkins while Gresick made a defensive save as well. The Blue Jays slip to 6-8 overall and 3-4 in the Centennial Conference.

The Red Devils improve to 7-8 overall and 2-6 in the CC. They travel to Ursinus College on Saturday to battle the Bears at 12:00 pm.
