(Westminster, Md.) – The Dickinson field hockey team had a strong start, but a late surge in the first half led host McDaniel College to a 3-1 win on Wednesday afternoon. Following a quick score by the Green Terror, the Devils pulled even before McDaniel answered with two late goals to end the half.
The Green Terror struck first, scoring just 1:40 into the contest on an unassisted goal by Katie Corson. The Devils answered to tie the game in the 17th minute as senior Tanya Bellingham (Alexandria, Va./Annandale) finished an assist from first-year Alyssa Stillwell (Shamong, N.J./Seneca).
McDaniel would retake the lead late in the first half. Paige Messersmith tallied her 11th goal of the season, assisted by Danielle DeColli, with just over six minutes remaining in the first half. Sara Reynolds gave the hosts a 3-1 advantage at the break, adding an unassisted tally with 1:02 to play in the first half.
The Red Devils were efficient, scoring on their lone shot of the half. The Green Terror fired-off 13 attempts while holding a 10-2 edge in penalty corners as junior goaltender Katy Schlechtweg (Mount Laurel, N.J./Moorestown Friends) made seven saves in the opening 35 minutes of action.
First-year Emily Fuss (Newtown Square, Pa./Notre Dame Academy) came on in the second half to record three stops on the day as McDaniel closed out the game with a 20-8 shot advantage. The Devils continued to apply pressure in the second half, forcing six penalty corners, while allowing just five in the second half.
Vicci Alexander made a pair of saves to record the shutout for McDaniel as they improve to 5-5 overall and 2-3 in the Centennial Conference.
The Red Devils slip to 4-7 overall and 0-5 in the conference. They will next face Bryn Mawr College on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
