(Westminster, Md.) – The Dickinson College women's basketball team gave host McDaniel all it could handle on Wednesday, but suffered a 60-54 loss in Centennial Conference action.
The Red Devils played virtually even with the Green Terror over the course of the first half, heading into the break with just a one point deficit at 29-28. McDaniel used an 11-0 run to open the second half, taking a 40-28 advantage at the 16:29 mark.
The Green Terror built the lead to as many as 16, 51-35, with a little over nine minutes to play in the game. The Red Devils weren't quite finished, making a late run to cut the margin to five on a pair of Belma Mekic (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff) free throws with just 1:56 remaining in regulation.
Mekic would pull the Devils even closer, draining 2-of-3 free throws at the 1:33 mark to make it a one possession game at 57-54. McDaniel missed on the other end, putting the ball back in the hands of the Red Devils. A missed shot went off the Red Devils and over McDaniel with just 10 seconds on the clock.
Rachael Rybak knocked-down a jumper to put McDaniel up, 59-54, with 27 seconds left to play. Dickinson missed on the other end and was forced to put Emma Wingard on the line. She hit 1-of-2 with five seconds remaining for the final score of 60-54.
Mekic finished with 14 points on the night, controlling seven rebounds while recording three steals. She went 8-for-12 from the free throw line as well. Junior Bridget Borgese (Swarthmore, Pa./Notre Dame de Namur) scored 18 points, hitting 14-of-15 free throws on the night to go with four rebounds and a pair of steals.
Junior Dana Walsh (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) tallied nine points, nine rebounds, three assists, a block and a steal. She controlled six offensive boards as the Devils held a 43-38 advantage on the glass. First-year Alexis Friedlander (Bethesda, Md./Maret School) chipped in with seven points, seven rebounds and three steals. First-year Kellie Nissen (Farmington, Conn./Farmington) dished out four assists.
Rybak led all scorers with 20 points on the night, adding five rebounds as McDaniel improves to 9-11 overall and 6-10 in the Centennial Conference
The Red Devils gained valuable ground at the free throw line, hitting 28-of-39 on the night. They would fall to 2-18 overall and 2-13 in the conference. They are on the road again on Saturday, traveling to Washington College for a 2:00 pm tip-off.
