Crusaders Battle Past #19-Red Devils 11-9

(Selinsgrove, Pa.) – The #19-ranked Dickinson College women's lacrosse team saw host Susquehanna University erase a five-goal deficit in the second half to post an 11-9 win on Tuesday afternoon.

 

The Red Devils jumped out to a 3-0 start behind a pair of assists from sophomore Lauren Jonas (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh). Jonas found first-year Carly O'Brien (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton Day School) to put the Devils on the board, just 2:04 into the contest.

 

Senior Taryn Abbassian (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) scored unassisted and Jonas found another first-year, Ali Dawson (Carle Place, N.Y./Carle Place) to give Dickinson a 3-0 advantage at the 19:42 mark.

 

Michelle McGuiness broke up the Devil run with a goal one minute later to cut the deficit to 3-1. O'Brien found junior Clare Manoli (Hudson, Ohio/Western Reserve Academy) with 11:55 to play in the half. The Crusaders struck with back-to-back goals to pull within one at the 8:22 mark.

 

Jonas tallied another assist, feeding Val Hoffman (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) and first-year Kelly Haglund (Chevy Chase, Md./Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart) found the net with just 42 seconds remaining in the half, finishing an assist from Kara Glazer (Towson, Md./Towson) to put the Devils up, 6-3, at the break.

 

O'Brien connected with Glazer to sandwich a pair of goals around another strike from McGuiness to give Dickinson an 8-4 lead with just over 23 minutes to play in the game. Dawson stretched the margin to 9-4, scoring unassisted with 22:45 on the clock.

 

Susquehanna came alive, scoring six unanswered goals over the course of the next 13 minutes to take the lead, 10-9, with 9:05 on the clock. Emma Ehler triggered the run, scoring twice and dishing out an assist. McGuiness tacked on another as well, scoring with 2:58 remaining to give the hosts an 11-9 advantage. The Crusaders would hold on, handing the Devils their first loss of the season.  

 

McGuiness led Susquehanna (1-0) with three goals and five draw controls. Emily Stankaitis made 17 saves in goal and controlled four ground balls.

 

O'Brien tallied three goals and an assist while Haglund led the team with five ground balls on the day. Glazer finished with three assists while Dawson added three draw controls and a pair of goals. Amanda Morse (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) made 11 saves and controlled a pair of ground balls.

 

The Red Devils slip to 2-1 on the season. They return home to face Stevenson University on Friday afternoon at 4:00 pm.
