Red Devil Men Play to 1-1 Draw at Swarthmore

Box Score

(Swarthmore, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's soccer team, ranked second in the Mid-Atlantic Region and 13th nationally, played to a 1-1 draw with Swarthmore, ranked third in the region. The game lived up to the billing as the hosts tallied a late goal to force overtime.

Neither team could net the winner in the extra frames as Swarthmore moves to 5-1-1 overall and 1-1 in the Centennial Conference. The Red Devils stand at 6-1-1 overall and 1-1 in the CC.

The Red Devils struck on a beautiful, upper-90 shot from junior Javier Mena (San Salvador, El Salvador/The American School) after first-year Alfred Hylton-Dei (Geneva, Switzerland/Mercersburg Academy, Pa.) received a great through-ball and went on a two-on-one with Mena.

The Garnet almost answered minutes later, breaking through but sending a shot high, over the net.

They would, however, later net the equalizer as Joe Keedy tallied his first collegiate goal with just 1:30 remaining in regulation. Keedy headed in a cross by Jake Wiener.

The Devils had two strong chances in the final seconds to regain the lead, but the Garnet held on, sending the game into overtime.

The match was the second straight overtime contest for Swarthmore

The Garnet kept possession in the early part of the first overtime. They had two very strong chances with both shots sailing just high of the crossbar. Swarthmore drew a free kick and sent yet another shot off the crossbar.

The Devils countered on the goal-kick as Hylton-Dei had a final shot attempt as time expired on the first overtime period. The Devils had a stronger showing in the second overtime, holding much more possession and creating a great chance that saw a Mena shot stray just inches wide of the post.

Swarthmore had a solid opportunity with a free kick in the last minute, but senior goalkeeper Cody Hickok (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) was there to make the save. Hickok finished with four saves and turned in an outstanding performance in the nets.

Peter Maxted made a pair of saves for Swarthmore. The Garnet held the advantage in shots, 20-15, while the Devils forced four corners, allowing just one.

The Red Devils return home to host McDaniel College on Thursday at 6:00 pm.
