(Carlisle, Pa.) – Senior Laura Hitchings (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin) returned to action for the first time on Tuesday, and made it memorable, scoring the game-winning goal just seconds later to lead Dickinson to a 2-1 win over Farleigh-Dickinson University.
Hitchings missed the Devils' first eight games with an injury, but returned just in time, picking up a rebound and finding the back of the cage at the 9:33 mark of the second half.
The Red Devils struck first as senior Tanya Bellingham (Alexandria, Va./Annandale) connected with an assist from first-year Alyssa Stillwell (Shamong, N.J./Seneca) to put Dickinson on the board, just 9:29 into the game.
Stephanie Geskes battled for a goal to even score, following a pair of brilliant defensive saves by senior Marybeth McCarthy (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) in the 45th minute. McCarthy turned away a shot by Rebecca Burns and recovered to block the rebound collected by Geskes. The third try, however, managed its way into the net to pull FDU even, 1-1.
Hitchings went on in the 60th minute and just seconds later, returned the favor, scoring from almost the same spot as Geskes, picking up a rebound in front of the cage.
Junior goaltender Katy Schlechtweg (Mount Laurel, N.J./Moorestown Friends) turned in a great performance for the Red Devils, making nine saves on the afternoon. Classmate Fallon Winters (Spring Lake, N.J./Northfield Mount Hermon) played an outstanding game on defense as well.
FDU-Florham held a slim 17-15 advantage in shots and a 13-5 edge in corners, but the Red Devil defense was up to the task.
Tess Loughran made seven saves for FDU-Florham, who slips to 5-4 overall. The Red Devils improve to 4-5 on the season. Dickinson is home again on Saturday, hosting Muhlenberg College at 11:00 am.
