Devils Soar Past Eagles in 9-2 Win

Box Score

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson field hockey team erupted for nine goals on Saturday, beating the rain and visiting Elmira College, 9-2. The Red Devils pull even at 2-2 on the season.

Dickinson struck early, converting a penalty corner, just 2:38 into the contest. First-year Allison Forhan (Hudson, Ohio/Western Reserve Academy) found the back of the cage, with assists from senior Tanya Bellingham (Alexandria, Va./Annandale) and first-year Caroline Karwel (Fairfax Station, Va./South County Secondary).

Forhan struck again, finishing an assist from senior Alex Boorse (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) in the eighth minute. The Red Devils continued to play well, controlling play for the better part of the half. Bellingham rattled the cage with an assist from Alexandra Becker (Spring House, Pa./Germantown Academy) 16 minutes to play in the half, stretching the lead to 3-0.

The Eagles looked to rally, scoring back-to-back goals as McKenna Light slipped behind the defense to finish an assist from Sarah Harden-Marshall with just over 10 minutes on the clock. Light fired a shot into the circle that was deflected into the cage by Caitlin Sickau, with just over five minutes to play in the half.

The Red Devils answered forcing a corner with timing running out. They forced another and converted with no time on the clock, taking a 4-2 lead into the break. Boorse picked up a loose ball off of the stick of an Elmira defender and put away a shot in the left corner.

The Devils wasted little time getting right back into the rhythm of the game as first-year Alyssa Stillwell (Shamong, N.J./Seneca) tipped in a shot off the stick of Natalie Polk (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic), just under six minutes into the half.

The Devils received strong play all over the field, anchored by solid defense from Fallon Winters (Spring Lake, N.J./Northfield –Mount Hermon) while Bellingham should leadership in the midfield.

Becker sandwiched a pair of goals around a penalty stroke from Karwel before Bellingham launched a rocket into the cage for the final tally with 3:47 left in the game. First-year Katie McCarthy (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) picked up the first assist of her collegiate career, feeding Bellingham on the Devils' final score.

The Red Devils unleashed 46 shots on the day, holding a 12-1 advantage on penalty corners and forcing Elmira goaltender Lauren Thomas to make 17 saves. Junior Katy Schlechtweg (Mount Laurel, N.J./Moorestown Friends) made a pair of saves before Emily Fuss (Newtown Square, Pa./Notre Dame Academy) came on to close out the game.

The Red Devils (2-2) travel to Frostburg State University on Wednesday. Start time is scheduled for 5:00 pm.
