16th-Ranked Bears Deal Devils First Conference Loss

Box Score

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson field hockey team suffered its first Centennial Conference loss of the season, dropping a 5-1 decision to #16-ranked Ursinus College on Saturday.

The Bears struck early as Devin Brakel capitalized on a scramble in front of the Dickinson cage, putting Ursinus on the board, just 3:18 into the contest. Megan Keenan converted a penalty corner off an assist from Nora Kornfeld, with just under five minutes remaining in the half, stretching the lead to 2-0 at the break.

The Red Devils came out of halftime with a spark, answering just 2:57 into the second. Catherine Perlmutter (Blue Bell, Pa./Germantown Academy) rattled the cage, finishing an assist from Jenny Davis (Edgewood, Md./Severn School). Perlmutter tied the school record for goals by a first-year with her 12th of the season.

The Red Devils continued to press, looking to tie the game. Ursinus used a quick counter to force a corner that would lead to another Bear tally. Megan Keenan found the back of the cage with a strong shot, directly off the insert from Nora Kornfeld, with 24:50 remaining in the game.

The Bears used the momentum to strike again, just 2:54 later. This time Stephanie Cooper redirected a shot by Keenan, putting Ursinus in front, 4-1. Brakel would net a final Bear goal with 19:22 left to play.

The Red Devils kept the pressure on down the stretch but strong play from sophomore goaltender, Danielle DeSpirito kept the Red Devils from cutting into the deficit. Aliki Torrence came up big for Bears as well, making a pair of defensive saves on the day.

DeSpirito finished with eight saves, stopping a penalty stroke in the first half, as Ursinus improves to 10-3 overall and 7-1 in the conference.

Senior Katy Schlechtweg (Mount Laurel, N.J./Moorestown Friends) made 12 saves in goal for the Red Devils as they slip to 11-3 overall and drop their first conference game of the season to stand at 7-1.

The Red Devils are home again on Wednesday, hosting Goucher College at 3:30 pm.
