(Bryn Mawr, Pa.) – The Dickinson field hockey team continued its strong start to the 2013 season, improving to 8-2 overall and 5-0 in the Centennial Conference.
A pair of first-years led the way as Erica Marshall (Baltimore, Md./Garrison Forest) and Maddie Groves (Acton, Mass./Lawrence Academy) each scored twice on the day. Marshall put the Devils on the scoreboard in the ninth minute, scoring off an assist from classmate Catherine Perlmutter (Blue Bell, Pa./Germantown Academy).
Sophomore Taylor Meehan (Phoenixville, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) rattled the back of the cage in the 18th minute and Groves tallied five minutes later, to put the Devils in front, 3-0.
The Owls broke up the run, scoring in the 28th minute. Holly Constants slipped the ball into the cage with an assist from Madison Beckmann to spoil the shutout effort.
The Red Devils struck almost immediately to start the second half. Groves netted her second of the day, scoring off an assist from junior Ali Becker (Spring House, Pa./Germantown Academy), just 55 seconds after the break.
Dickinson continued to provide pressure as Marshall would score again, this time finishing an assist from senior Lauren Wyman (Akron, Ohio/Western Reserve), with just over 21 minutes remaining in the match.
A pair of first-years closed out the scoring as well with Glenn Carr (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) finding the net, off an assist from Kirsten Walsh (Shickshinny, Pa./Northwest Area), with 8:43 left to play in the game.
The Red Devils were dominant, statistically, holding a 27-1 advantage in shots. The Devils also held the edge in penalty corners, forcing 13 while allowing just three, defensively.
Senior Katy Schlechtweg (Mount Laurel, N.J./Moorestown Friends) and sophomore Emily Fuss (Newtown Square, Pa./Notre Dame) split time in the cage, facing just one shot.
Faith Westdorp made 14 saves for the Owls as they fall to 3-7 overall and 0-5 in the conference. They Red Devils remain unbeaten in conference play, improving to 5-0 on the year and 8-2 overall.
The Red Devils return home to face Gettysburg College on Wednesday at 4:00 pm.
