Devils Play Even, Suffer 13-11 Setback at #19 Elizabethtown

(Elizabethtown, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's lacrosse team opened the season on a chilly afternoon at #19-ranked Elizabethtown. The Red Devils played even with the Blue Jays throughout the game, but suffered a 13-11 setback in the end.

 

Senior Clare Manoli (Hudson, Ohio/ Western Reserve Academy) put the Devils on the board with a free position goal, just 1:10 into the game.

 

Elizabethtown answered with back to back goals before sophomore Ali Dawson (Carle Place, N.Y./Carle Place) struck twice to put Dickinson in front, 3-2, with 17:18 remaining in the half.

 

First-year Katie Iverson (Marblehead, Mass./Pingree School) and Manoli countered a free position goal to make the score, 5-3. Becky Porter converted a free position shot and dished out two assists to give Elizabethtown a 6-5 advantage with 1:16 left to play. Michele Grosso capitalized on a penalty, scoring with 44 seconds on the clock, giving the hosts a 7-5, halftime lead.

 

The Red Devils erased a 9-6 deficit in the second half, tying the game at the 19:25 mark on the first collegiate goal for Jennifer Morrissey (Rockville, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel). Iverson struck twice in just over a minute to pull the Devils within one.

 

The Blue Jays pulled back in front, 11-9, and would hold the lead for the remainder of the game. The Devils were within a goal at 11-10 and 12-11. Porter found Emily Butler for an insurance goal at the 10:04 mark as the game went scoreless from that point.

 

Dawson, Manoli and Morrissey each scored twice on the afternoon. Senior captain Chloe Golod (Huntington, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) caused three turnovers and controlled three ground balls. Morrissey added three GBs as well, and caused a pair of turnovers.

 

First-year Caroline Clancy (Monkton, Md./Hereford) picked-up five ground balls and caused two turnovers. Senior Amanda Morse (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) made four saves in goal for the Devils.

 

Butler scored five goals and Porter tallied three goals and four assists to lead Elizabethtown (1-0). Rachael Waldman made six saves and controlled seven ground balls in the Blue Jay nets.

 

The Red Devils (0-1) travel to the St. Paul's School in Brooklandville, Maryland on Saturday to face St. Mary's College at 3:00 pm.
