Susquehanna Slips Past Dickinson 18-14

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's lacrosse team suffered an 18-14 setback at the hands of Susquehanna University on Thursday afternoon at Biddle Field.

 

The game was relatively even in the early minutes with Susquehanna holding a 4-3 advantage, midway through the first half. Becky McHugh struck twice in a 5-0 run to put the Crusaders out in front, 9-3, with 5:31 remaining in the first half.

 

Sophomore Ali Dawson (Carle Place, N.Y./Carle Place) converted a free-position attempt at the 1:22 mark, to make the score, 10-4, at halftime.

 

Sophomore Kelly Haglund (Chevy Chase, Md./Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart) scored twice in the first half and struck early in the second, finishing an assist from first-year Caroline Clancy (Monkton, Md./Hereford), just 53 seconds in.

 

The Red Devils continued to battle, but could not close the gap. They were gaining some momentum at the end, but simply ran out of minutes. Dawson sandwiched a pair of goals around a score by Linzi Burstein (Alexandria, Va./TC Williams) to cut the margin to 17-12, with 6:01 remaining in the game.

 

Dawson and Haglund tacked on a pair of late goals for the final of 18-14.

 

Haglund tallied a game-high five goals, adding four ground balls, four draw controls and four caused turnovers on the day. Dawson struck four times and handed out a pair of assists. First-year Jennifer Morrissey (Rockville, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) turned in a strong performance, handing out a pair of assists and controlling four GBs.

 

Sophomore Carly O'Brien (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton Day School) scored twice and handed out an assist. Senior Clare Manoli (Hudson, Ohio/Western Reserve Academy) chipped in with a goal while Clancy and junior Lauren Jonas (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) each handed out assists.

 

Sophomore goaltender Grace Morelli (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) finished with 11 saves for the Red Devils. Senior Chloe Golod (Huntington, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) added four ground balls on the defensive end.

 

Emma Ehler and Michelle McGuiness each scored four times to lead Susquehanna in its opener. Emily Stankaitis made 12 saves on the afternoon.

 

The Red Devils slip to 1-2 on the season. They travel to Messiah College on Wednesday to face the Falcons at 7:00 pm.
