Late Goal Leads Mules Past Devils in Heartbreaker 16-15

(Allentown, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's lacrosse team suffered another heartbreaking loss, falling at Muhlenberg, 16-15, on Wednesday afternoon. Ally Shaffer converted a free-position shot with just 16 seconds remaining to give Muhlenberg the win.

 

Senior Val Hoffman (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) turned in an outstanding performance, scoring a career-high six goals on the night.

 

The game was back-and-forth the entire way. Muhlenberg gained a three-goal advantage, twice in the contest, but the Red Devils rallied to tie each time.

 

Hoffman scored her second of the game to put the Devils in front, 4-2, with 12:26 remaining in the first half. She put the Devils up, 5-4 and 6-5, before Michelle Cerosimo tied things up at halftime, scoring with 38 seconds on the clock.

 

The Mules opened a 9-6 advantage, but senior Linzi Burstein (Alexandria, Va./TC Williams) broke up the run at the 24:29 mark. Hoffman answered a Muhlenberg goal with back-to-back scores in a span of 41 seconds.

 

Caroline Clancy (Monkton, Md./Hereford) found the net and Kelly Haglund (Chevy Chase, Md./Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart) scored off an assist from Kara Glazer (Towson, Md./Towson) to put the Devils on top, 11-10.

 

Clare Manoli (Hudson, Ohio/Western Reserve Academy) and Burstein traded goals with Muhlenberg to give the Devils a 13-12 lead with 9:03 remaining in regulation.

 

Three straight from the Mules gave them a 15-13 advantage with 7:53 to play. Glazer finished an assist from Jennifer Morrissey (Rockville, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) and Carly O'Brien (Cranberry, N.J./Princeton Day School) tied the game at the 3:42 mark.

 

Shaffer drew a foul and converted the free position goal with 16 seconds remaining and Muhlenberg was able to hold on for the win.

 

Hoffman led all scorers with her six-goal effort. O'Brien scored two goals and handed out a pair of assists while Glazer handed out four assists on the day. Haglund controlled six draws while Clancy snared.

 

Moira Mahoney (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) controlled five ground balls and two draws. Grace Morelli (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) made six saves in the nets while Amanda Morse (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) stopped three shots.

 

Molly Davin led Muhlenberg with five goals while Stephanie Umbach tallied four goals and one assist. Tiffany Kreider made 12 saves on the day.

 

The Red Devils slip to 7-8 overall and 3-5 in the Centennial Conference. They return home to face Franklin & Marshall on Saturday at 12:00 noon.
