Juniata Slips Past Devils 2-1 in Season Opener

Box Score

(Huntingdon, Pa.) – The Dickinson field hockey team battled evenly with Juniata College on Saturday but couldn't overcome a 2-0 deficit, falling 2-1 in the season opener.

Juniata (2-0) put a goal in the board in the 25th minute as Katie Landis broke through the defense and found the back of the cage. The host Eagles stretched the lead to 2-0 as Sara Bilheimer slipped a pass to Allison Groft, with just over 26 minutes remaining in the game.

First-year Caroline Perlmutter (Blue Bell, Pa./Germantown Academy) cut the lead to one with just under 10 minutes remaining in the game. She finished a rebound off a shot from Germantown Academy grad, junior Ali Becker (Springhouse, Pa./Germantown Academy) to keep the Devils in striking distance.

The Red Devils forced a penalty corner in the 65th minute as they looked to net the equalizer. Sophomore Caroline Karwel (Fairfax Station, Va./South County Secondary) fired off a shot but Eagle goaltender Julianne Jones came up with the save to preserve the win.

The Devils held the edge statistically in a tightly contested match. Dickinson led 6-5 in shots and 4-2 in penalty corners.

Jones combined with Shelby Miller to make five saves for Juniata. Senior Katy Schlechtweg (Mt. Laurel, N.J./Moorestown Friends) made a pair of saves for the Devils.

The Red Devils travel to Wilson College on Wednesday for a 4:30 start.
