(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson field hockey team started early on Saturday, looking to beat the possibility of bad weather. The Red Devils jumped out to an early lead, as well, en route to a 2-1 win over visiting Swarthmore College.
The Red Devils improved to 4-2 on the season, and are off to a 2-0 start in Centennial Conference play.
Sophomore Alyssa Stillwell (Shamong, N.J./Seneca) put the Devils on the board, just 1:35 into the contest, redirecting a hard shot by junior midfielder, Ali Becker (Spring House, Pa./Germantown Academy) for a 1-0 lead.
The Devils tacked on another goal before halftime as first-year Erica Marshall (Baltimore, Md./Garrison Forest) put a shot in the back of the cage, off a beautiful assist from classmate Maddie Groves (Acton, Mass./Lawrence Academy) with just over seven minutes remaining.
Swarthmore would answer in the second half. Nia Jones capitalized on a scramble in front the net, and was able to put the ball across the line to cut the deficit to, 2-1, with 24:02 to play in the game.
Senior goaltender Katy Schlechtweg (Mount Laurel, N.J./Moorestown Friends) turned in a strong performance between the pipes. She finished with four saves, but made a number of strong plays in the circle as well.
Sophomore Caroline Karwel (Fairfax Station, Va./South County Secondary) made a key play in the first half, making a defensive save on another scrum to keep the Garnet off the scoreboard.
The Red Devils turned in a dominant performance for the better part of the game, outshooting the visitors, 32-10. Dickinson also forced 14 penalty corners while allowing just five on the defensive end.
The Red Devils (4-2, 2-0 CC) travel to Shenandoah University on Tuesday night for a 7:00 pm start.
