Red Devils Suffer 2-1 Setback at Washington

(Chestertown, Md.) – The Dickinson field hockey team tried to rally buy came up short, falling 2-1 at Washington College on Saturday.

 

Washington struck twice in the first half with a pair of unassisted goals. Jordan Mitchell collected a rebound and scored to put the host Shorewomen on the board in the 25th minute.

 

Jenn Miller found the cage after a ball deflected off the stick of a defender, leaving her wide open to stretch the lead to 2-0 with 5:35 remaining in the half.

 

Dickinson continued to battle, looking to rally from the 2-0 deficit. They forced three straight corners and were finally able to capitalize. Sophomore Merritt Davis (Baltimore, Md./Garrison Forest) had her shot blocked off the corner but Catherine Perlmutter (Blue Bell, Pa./Germantown Academy) gained possession and gave the Red Devils new life, scoring her 13th goal of the season, with just over 11 minutes remaining in the game.

 

Washington was able to hold on, not allowing another shot for the Devils over the final 10 minutes. The Shorewomen held an 18-6 advantage in shots and a 15-4 edge in penalty corners. The hosts forced nine corners in the first half while not surrendering any on the defensive end.

 

Junior Emily Fuss (Newtown Square, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) made four saves in goal for Dickinson. The Red Devils slip to 10-4 overall and 4-3 in the Centennial Conference.

 

The Devils return home to host Johns Hopkins on Wednesday at 3:00 pm.
