(Carlisle, Pa.) – The #16-ranked Dickinson men's soccer team struck first, but visiting Swarthmore College scored twice to claim a 2-1 victory, handing the Red Devils their first Centennial Conference loss of the season.
The match was well played all over the field with both teams working the ball with strong passing.
The Devils broke through for the first goal of the game, 10 minutes into the second half. Drew Carneal (Woodbine, Md./Sandy Springs Friends) served a ball into the area to a waiting Alfred Hylton-Dei (Geneva, Switzerland/Mercersburg Academy), who put the ball in the back of the net.
The Garnet went man-down when Michael Superdock received a red card after committing a foul as the last defender on a Red Devil breakaway.
The Garnet continued to battle and scored with just 4:41 remaining in regulation to tie the game and force overtime. Tommy Sheehan slipped behind the defense on a high ball into the area and scored to even the match.
The teams played scoreless through the first overtime period as the teams combined for just three shots. Billy Evers found space at the top of the 18 and had a good look at the goal to net the game-winner in the 103rd minute.
The Devils held a 24-19 shot advantage and a 5-3 edge in corners. Tyler Zon made nine saves as Swarthmore improved to 9-5-2 overall and 3-4-0 in the conference.
Senior Reed Milbrath (Dickerson, Md./Sandy Springs Friends) made nine saves in the nets for Dickinson. Senior Connor Gavey (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Warde) played well in the center back position as well.
The Red Devils slip to 11-3-1 overall and 6-1-0 in the conference. They travel to Muhlenberg College for a 7:00 pm match on Wednesday night and close out the regular season at conference front-runner Franklin & Marshall.
