(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team had visiting Gettysburg in trouble, but the Bullets made a late run to overtake the Red Devils, 56-47, on Wednesday night.
Gettysburg started strong, taking a 7-2 lead in the early minutes. The Red Devils battled back to tie the game, 8-8, and pulled in front on a Sarah Phillips (West Amwell, N.J./South Hunterdon) three-pointer.
Phillips added a pair of free throws and hit another three-pointer to give Dickinson an 18-14 advantage at the 11:03 mark. The Red Devils stretched the lead to six before the Bullets made a run, pulling within one, with 4:52 remaining in the half.
Phillips buried her third three-pointer of the game at the end of the half, giving Dickinson a 30-25 advantage at the break.
The Red Devils continued to hold their ground at the start of the second half. A three-pointer from Rachel Sisco (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) gave Dickinson its biggest lead of night, 35-26, with 15:10 remaining in regulation.
Gettysburg once again made a run, pulling within a field-goal, but the Red Devils would not relinquish the lead. The Bullets would eventually tie the game, using a 6-0 run to pull even, 43-43, with 6:12 remaining in the game.
Caroline Murphy hit a jumper and converted a three-point play to give the Bullets a five-point lead with 4:30 on the clock. The Devils would cut the lead to two but Gettysburg was able to hold on, hitting 7-of-10 free throws in the final 1:35.
First-year Mary Martin (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale) led the Red Devils with a double-double, scoring 13 points and controlling a game-high 10 rebounds. Phillips finished with 11 points while first-year Jennifer Smith (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) reached double-figures with 10 points, adding five rebounds and a pair of steals. Erica Buls (New Market, Md./Oakdale) tallied six points, six rebounds and a pair of blocked shots.
Alyssa Isler led Gettysburg (13-6, 8-5) with a game-high 15 points, going 8-for-10 from the free throw line. Murphy finished with 12 points and Emily Duggan added 11 points and seven rebounds.
The Red Devils fall to 4-15 overall and 1-13 in the Centennial Conference. They are home again on Saturday, hosting Ursinus College at 4:00 pm. Be sure to wear pink and support the Red Devils in their Play for Kay game to support the fight against breast cancer.
