(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's soccer team rallied with 10 players to come-from-behind and overtake visiting Shenandoah University, 2-1, in overtime at Miller Memorial Field on Wednesday night.
The Hornets scored late in the first half to take a 1-0 lead in the 39th minute. Catherine Major tallied her first goal of the season, finishing an assist from Elizabeth Bellido.
Shenandoah, still looking for its first win of the season, played even with the Devils throughout the first half, and looked as though they were primed for the upset.
Dickinson held a 15-6 advantage in shots in the second half, but the Hornets continued to keep the slate clean. The Red Devils found themselves in a little bit more of a bind when senior defender Kerri Bergin (Annandale, N.J./Northern Highlands) was sent off with a red card.
That only seemed to inspire the Red Devils as they continued to battle. Shortly thereafter, they would answer to pull even as senior Jess Swain (Wilmington, Del./Wilmington Friends) hit a one-timer into the upper corner.
Senior Allie Young (New Canaan, Conn./St. Luke's) set up the goal with a beautiful through-ball into the corner of the penalty area that Swain blasted into the net.
The teams played even for the final seven minutes to force overtime. The Devils wasted little time in the extra frame. Another senior would rise to the occasion as Michaela Donohue (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville) received a pass from junior Bridgette Corbran (Manasquan, N.J./Wall) and beat the goaltender for the game-winner in the 96th minute.
The win keeps the Red Devils unbeaten as they improve to 5-0 on the season. Junior Charlotte Armour (New Haven, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) made four saves for Dickinson before first-year Amanda Masterson (Essex Falls, N.J./West Essex) came on make a pair of stops in the second half and earn the win.
Erin Septer finished with 10 saves for Shenandoah as the slip to 0-4-1 on the year.
The Red Devils return to action next Wednesday, hosting Alvernia University at 5:00 pm on Miller Memorial Field.
