(Chestertown, Md.) – The Dickinson men's soccer team won a dogfight at Washington College to claim the Centennial Conference opener, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Devils scored a pair of goals quickly and looked to be in control early in the contest. Drew Carneal (Woodbine, Md./Sandy Springs Friends) deflected a free-kick from Austin Thames (Frederick, Md./Urbana) into the corner of the net, to put Dickinson on the board, just 3:16 into the match.
Thames would be on the serving end of another Red Devil goal, less than three minutes later. Thames tossed a throw-in to the head of senior Nate Latshaw (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata), who flicked it on to the foot of Jonathan Harper (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) for a 2-0 lead.
Washington answered in the 12th minute as Drew Thompson hit a long blast, scoring off an assist from Matt Wilfong to cut the deficit to 2-1 at halftime.
Junior Alfred Hylton-Dei (Geneva, Switzerland/Mercersburg Academy) gave the Devils what would prove to be some key insurance, winning a 50-50 ball and scoring from 25 yards out to a 3-1 advantage.
The Shoremen tried to rally at Brian Wilkinson hit another long shot into the upper corner of the net with five minutes remaining in regulation.
The Red Devils would hold on for the 3-2 win, improving to 5-2 on the season and 1-0 in the Centennial Conference. Senior Reed Milbrath (Dickerson, Md./Sandy Springs Friends) made three saves in goal for Dickinson.
The Red Devils return home to face the University of Mary Washington at Miller Memorial Field on Wednesday night. Opening kick-off is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
