(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team played one of its best first halves of the season, but visiting Haverford was able to slip away with a 61-48 win at the Kline Center on Saturday.
Dickinson played even with the 'Fords, playing to a 6-6 tie in the opening five minutes. The Red Devils pulled in front, 13-12, behind back-to-back three-pointers from first-year Myonie Williamson (Newtown Square, Pa./Radnor) and junior Sam Kennedy (Chatham, N.J./Chatham).
Senior guard Sarah Phillips (West Amwell, N.J./South Hunterdon) tied the game at 21, knocking down a three-pointer at the 2:21 mark.
Haverford led at the half, 25-22 as the game saw four ties and seven lead changes. The 'Fords held the advantage in the paint while Dickinson had a slight edge in bench points, 10-9.
Kennedy tied the game, right out of the break, converting a three-point play, just 17 seconds into the second half. The 'Fords used a pair of three-pointers from Olivia Walsh and Elizabeth Lynch to stretch the lead to eight at the 16:13 mark, 35-27.
The teams traded field-goals before Kennedy hit a three-pointer to cut the deficit to five. Jacqueline Pizzuto capped an 11-1 run to put Haverford on top, 48-33, with 8:49 remaining in the game. First-year Kassidy Lesher (Shoemakersville, Pa./Hamburg) grabbed an offensive rebound and hit a pair of free throws to bring the Devils within eight, at the 5:02 mark.
Pizzuto would hit two more three-pointers as Haverford held the lead down the stretch for the final of 61-48.
Kennedy led the Red Devils with 12 points while sophomore Mary Martin (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale) added eight points, 10 rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals. Sophomore guard Ellen Bair (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) tallied five points, four rebounds and five assists.
Lesher grabbed seven rebounds to go with three points, two assists and two steals. Phillips hit a pair of three-pointers for six points.
Sierra Berkel had a double-double for Haverford (9-6, 7-1 CC) with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Pizzuto led the 'Fords with a game-high 19 points while handing out three assists.
The Red Devils slip to 3-11 overall and 1-9 in the Centennial Conference. They are home again on Wednesday night, hosting Franklin & Marshall College at 6:00 pm.
