(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's volleyball team jumped out to an early lead on visiting Gettysburg, winning the opening set, but suffered a 3-1 setback as the Bullets rallied for the win.
The opening set was a battle right from the start. The teams played even throughout with Gettysburg twice pulling in front by three points. The Devils answered each time and overcame a late, 27-26 deficit, to win the opener, 29-27.
The second set was similar to the first with the Bullets gaining some breathing room at 10-7. The Devils kept it close, calling a timeout with Gettysburg leading, 16-13. Dickinson forced a timeout, pulling within one at 19-18. The Bullets built the lead to 23-19, but Dickinson countered again with back-to-back points before falling 25-21.
Gettysburg stormed out to quick 5-0 lead and went on a big run to lead 16-4. The Devils were unable to make up any ground, dropping the third set, 25-9. Dickinson would regroup in the fourth, and would not go quietly.
After a back-and-forth start, the Devils pulled in front, 13-11, forcing a Gettysburg timeout. A 7-1 run gave the visitors an 18-14 lead before the Devils rallied to cut the margin to one. The Bullets were able to close out the set and the match with a 25-18 decision.
Lauren Bergin led the Bullets with 11 kills while Stephanie Blair handed out 30 assists. Gettysburg improves to 11-10 overall and 2-3 in the Centennial Conference.
Sophomore Gillian Chan (Brooklyn, N.Y./Poly Prep Country Day) led the Red Devils with 10 kills and a pair of solo blocks. Senior Emily Smith (Victor, N.Y./Victor) and junior Lauren Ahern (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) each recorded nine kills while Smith added 10 digs.
Sophomore Erin Bongo (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) tallied eight kills, nine digs and a pair of aces. Arielle Misrok (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) had a game-high 20 digs to go with four assists and an ace.
First-year setter Hannah Smith (Victor, N.Y./Victor) added 31 assists, 13 digs and two aces while Lauren Beecher (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) chipped in with six kills on the night.
The Red Devils slip to 7-13 overall and 1-5 in the conference. They travel to Washington College on Saturday for a 1:00 pm start.
