Davis Ties School Mark in Key Red Devil Win

Box Score

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson field hockey team turned in a great performance to claim a key Centennial Conference match-up, holding off a late rally by Washington College for a 4-2 victory on Saturday afternoon.

Junior Merritt Davis (Baltimore, Md./Garrison Forest) led the way with a pair of assists, tying a school record with her 11th of the season. Davis set another school mark last weekend, handing out a record four assists in the Devils' win at Bryn Mawr.

The Red Devils struck quickly on Saturday, capitalizing on a penalty corner, just 2:38 into the contest. Sophomore Kim Monteferante (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Lakeland) inserted the corner, and Davis blasted a shot to give Dickinson a 1-0 lead.

The Red Devils stretched the lead to 2-0 with just over six minutes remaining in the half. First-year Julia Murphy (Greenwood Village, Colo./Colorado Academy) intercepted a pass in the midfield and made a great move to trigger a fast-break, carrying the ball to the top of the circle. Murphy dropped a great pass inside to Alex Bonser (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) who found the back of the cage with a beautiful finish.

The Red Devils had the advantage in possession in the first half, outshooting the Shorewomen, 14-3, while holding a 9-2 edge in penalty corners.

Dickinson would capitalize on another corner to stretch the lead to 3-0. Sophomore Emilie Arrix (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) was in the right place at the right time as senior goaltender Sadie Robertson turned away another blast from Davis, but it went right to the stick of Arrix for the finish.

Washington would make things interesting as Michaela Conners put the Shorewomen on the board with a shot across the mouth of the goal found its way into the cage and Liz Davis cut the deficit to 3-2, scoring off a corner with an assist from Allison Remenapp, with 15 minutes remaining.

The Red Devils kept the pressure on, forcing back-to-back corners, producing shots from Davis and junior Perlmutter. Davis would tally her record-setting assist on the next attempt as Catherine Perlmutter (Blue Bell, Pa./Germantown Academy) redirected another blast to give Dickinson some breathing room with just over six minutes to play.

The Devils were dominant, statistically, outshooting the visitors, 29-6, on the day. They finished with a 15-5 advantage on penalty corners with strong defensive play from Davis and Monteferante, along with solid performances from Francie Pena (Lawrence Township, N.J./Lawrenceville) and Danielle Schwab (Highland, Md./River Hill).

Bonser turned in a another strong performance in the midfield, with support from Murphy and senior Caroline Karwel (Fairfax Station, Va./South Country Secondary).

Senior Emily Fuss (Newtown Square, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) turned away back-to-back shots early for her only two saves of the game, behind an outstanding defensive effort.

Robertson did all she could in the cage for Washington, stopping 13 shots on the day. The Shorewomen slip to 8-5 overall and fall to 3-3 in the Centennial Conference.

The Red Devils improve to 9-4 overall and 5-2 in the CC. Dickinson is on the road on Wednesday, traveling to Baltimore to face Johns Hopkins University at 7:00 pm on Homewood Field.
