(Collegeville, Pa.) – The Dickinson field hockey team had a great start against #6-ranked Ursinus College, but Bears put together a scoring run at the end of the first half, claiming a 5-0 win here on Saturday afternoon at Biddle Field.
Ursinus scored four goals in a span of 10:50 at the end of the first half. The Devils kept the Bears off the board for the first 23 minutes, playing solid defense while creating some strong scoring chances on the offensive end.
Senior forward Danielle Stong put Ursinus on the board, capitalizing on a rebound after a penalty corner, scoring unassisted with 11:30 to play in the half. Sam Macchio scored back-to-back goals, just three minutes apart to stretch the lead to 3-0.
Senior forward Devin Brakel found the back of the cage with just 35 seconds remaining, scoring on an assist by junior forward Amber Steigerwalt.
In the second half, junior defender Colleen Leahy scored unassisted at 50:40 for the final goal of the day.
The sixth-ranked Bears owned a 33-8 shot advantage and did not let the Red Devils have a shot in the second half of play. Senior goalkeeper Danielle DeSpirito made a pair of saves for Ursinus while Dickinson goaltender Emily Fuss (Newtown Square, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) turned away 14 shots on the day.
Ursinus improves to 13-3 overall and 8-1 in the Centennial Conference. The Red Devils slip to 10-5 and 6-3 in the CC. Dickinson is in action again tomorrow afternoon, traveling to Kean University in New Jersey to face St. Joseph's at 2:00 pm.
