(Lancaster, Pa.) – The Dickinson field hockey team had a tough outing in its regular season finale, falling at #4-ranked Franklin & Marshall, 5-1, on Saturday afternoon.
The Diplomats jumped out to an early lead, scoring in the seventh minute as Clare Wirth tallied her fifth goal of the season, scoring from the left side of the circle, off an assist from Maria Guarisco.
Audrey Buckman put F&M in front by two, finishing a rebound off a shot by Sydney Cole, with just under 26 minutes to play in the half.
The Red Devils shut down the scoring for the remainder of the half as F&M held an 11-1 shot advantage. The Diplomats forced six penalty corners while the Devils earned a pair late in the half.
Dickinson opened the second half with a corner as well, but the shot by senior Caroline Karwel (Fairfax Station, Va./South County Secondary) was blocked.
F&M stretched the lead to 3-0, capitalizing on a penalty stroke from Clare Wirth as she scored her second of the game.
Senior goaltender Emily Fuss (Newtown Square, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) turned away three straight shots, and tallied another save after a Diplomats corner.
F&M tacked on goals Guarisco in the 50th minute and Sydney Cole scored her sixth of the season to give the hosts a 5-0 advantage.
The Red Devils spoiled the shutout with 12:21 remaining in the game as first-year Chelsea Kramer (New Vernon, N.J./Morristown Beard) turned and found the back of the cage with her eighth goal of the season.
Fuss finished with 10 saves on the afternoon while sophomore Freddie Bancroft (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) came on add a save as well. Junior Merritt Davis (Baltimore, Md./Garrison Forest) took away a goal with a defensive save in the 59th minute.
The Red Devils slip to 11-6 overall and 6-4 in the Centennial Conference. They earn the #5-seed in next week's conference playoffs, traveling to Muhlenberg College on Wednesday night. Game time will be announced on Monday.
