Red Devils Topple Terror 6-3

Box Score

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson field hockey team erupted with four goals in the second half to break a 2-2 tie for a 6-3 win over visiting McDaniel College on Wednesday afternoon.

It was expected to potentially be a high scoring affair with both teams able to put goals on the board. The Red Devils struck first as sophomore Amber Dey (Flemington, N.J./South Hunterdon) redirected a shot off the stick of junior Catherine Perlmutter (Blue Bell, Pa./Germantown Academy), 8:45 into the contest.

The Green Terror wasted little time pulling even on a penalty corner. Rachel Cressman scored off the insert from Sarah Bach, just over two minutes later to knot the game, 1-1.

The Red Devils countered with a corner of their own, but Christina Gooding saved back-to-back shots from Perlmutter and turned away another by sophomore Alex Bonser (Wallingford, Conn./Strath Haven) to keep the score level.

Dickinson had another strong opportunity as sophomore Kim Monteferante (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Lakeland) rattled a shot off the post. McDaniel pulled in front as Bach tallied her second assist of the game, finding Gabrielle Yore in the circle with 9:16 remaining in the first half.

The Devils tied things up before halftime as junior Merritt Davis (Baltimore, Md./Garrison Forest) scored off a corner, with an assist on the insert from Monteferante, with just over four minutes to play in the half.

They kept the pressure on in the final minutes of the first half, forcing a pair of penalty corners and four more saves from Gooding, who finished with seven in the opening stanza.

McDaniel struck first after the break, gaining a temporary advantage at the 29 minute mark. Haley VanNostrand scored off an assist from Erica DeColli. Dickinson answered, almost exactly four minutes later, as what was turning into a shootout became tied once again, 3-3, with just under 25 minutes to play.

This time it was sophomore Emilie Arrix (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) redirecting an assist from Perlmutter. First-year Chelsea Kramer (New Vernon, N.J./Morristown Beard) gave the Devils the lead, finding the back of the cage with a rocket from just inside the circle, with 17:55 remaining.

Despite solid goaltending from Gooding, Dickinson and Monteferante would capitalize with two more goals, both off penalty corners. Monteferante tacked on two goals, just over three minutes apart to give the Devils some breathing room with 10 minutes to play in the game.

Monteferante tallied the first with an assist from Caroline Karwel (Fairfax Station, Va./South County Secondary) and converted the second, putting away a rebound off the pads of Gooding for the final of 6-3.

Gooding finished with 14 saves, making seven in each half as the Red Devils held a 32-12 advantage in shots. Dickinson was dominant in the second half, forcing nine corners while allowing just one on the defensive end, with no time remaining. They held the edge, 15-5, for the game, in what was a key Centennial Conference match-up for both teams.

Senior Emily Fuss (Newtown Square, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) made a pair of saves on the day while Monteferante finished with two goals, an assist, and played an outstanding game on defense.

McDaniel slips to 6-5 overall and 1-4 in the conference. The Red Devils improve to 7-3 and 3-2 in the CC. Dickinson is on the road this weekend, traveling to Bryn Mawr College for a 1:00 pm start on Saturday.
