(York, Pa.) – The #18-ranked Dickinson women's lacrosse team suffered its second straight setback to another top-20 team, falling on the road at #16-ranked York College, 16-7, on Thursday.
The host Spartans struck early as Jayme Verman scored just 26 seconds into the contest. Sarah Castle struck three minutes later to give York a 2-0 advantage. The Red Devils answered with goals from Carly O'Brien (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton Day School) and Sophie Waine (Wellesley, Mass./Greenwich) to pull the Devils even with just under 21 minutes to play in the half.
York put together a 4-0 run as Brittany Noell recorded a natural hat-trick, finishing three assists from Verman for a 5-2 lead. Verman fed Gina Bieneman for the Spartans' sixth goal, with 8:09 remaining.
Waine scored on a free position in the final minute to make the score, 7-3, at halftime. Sophomore Maddy Siebold (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) found Allison Carey (Weston, Conn./Laurelton Hall), out of the break, to pull the Devils within two goals, just 1:56 into the second half.
Verman scored and dished out an assist as York netted three straight to stretch the margin to 9-4, at the 25 minute mark. O'Brien scored a goal and assisted sophomore Talene Bush (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) around a York goal to make the score, 10-6, at the midpoint of the half.
York took control of the game with a 6-0 clip, triggered by scores from Verman and Noell. Katelyn Cattrano tallied a pair of assists in the run.
Senior Kelly Haglund (Chevy Chase, Md./Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart) finished Siebold's third assist of the game, scoring in the final seconds for the final of 16-7.
Verman led York (5-2) with three goals and six assists while Noell tallied four goals. Charlotte Wright earned the win in goal for York, making seven saves on the day.
Siebold led the Devil attack with three assists, three ground balls and a pair of draw controls. O'Brien added a pair of goals and an assist. Waine tallied a two goals, two GBs, two draw and three caused turnovers.
Moira Mahoney (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) picked up four ground balls and caused three turnovers. JoJo Auerbach (Chevy Chase, Md./Bullis) made five saves in the first half while Tara Cuddihy (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) came on to made seven stops in in the second.
The Red Devils slip to 3-2 on the season. They open Centennial Conference play on Saturday, traveling to Bryn Mawr College for a 1:00 pm start.
